ABOUT VILLAGE 1 - THE HYPE WITH KWANJULA

SIKATI, THE HEADMASTER’S NIECE IS TO BE MARRIED INTO THE RICHEST FAMILY From THE NEIGHBORING TOWN, KIBIBI.
THIS IS MUCH TO THE DISMAY OF HER BOY FRIEND, WALAI.

THE REVERENDI IS DETERMINED TO AID THE BROKEN HEARTED TEENAGER TO FIGHT FOR HIS GIRL FRIEND. SENGA WILL STOP AT NOTHING TO GET A SHARE OF THE DOWRY THAT THE HEDIMASTA CLAIMS FOR HIMSELF.
THIS SEQUEL OF EVENTS IS TYPICAL OF THE MUCH ANTICIPATED CEREMONY IN KABASIIMBI. THE CEREMONY SERVES TO REINFORCE TRADITIONAL FAMILY ROLES AND THIS WHERE THE HEADMASTER AND THE SENGA COME IN.

THE KWANJULA CEREMONY

BEFORE THE INTRODUCTION OF THE CHURCH IN UGANDA, THE BAGANDA HAD A DIFFERENT CEREMONY TO UNITE A COUPLE.
MARRIAGE NEVER INVOLVED A CHURCH OR A RING; THERE WAS NO CHURCH, BUT RATHER AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE GROOM AND THE BRIDE’S PARENTS.
ONCE A YOUNG LADY WAS OF AGE, IT WAS TIME FOR HER TO GET HER OWN HOME.

WHAT WOULD COMMENCE WOULD BE THE CEREMONY TERMED “THE KWANJULA”, WHERE THE GROOM WOULD VISIT THE BRIDE’S HOME AND BE INTRODUCED AS HER FUTURE HUSBAND.

HE WOULD OFFER THE BRIDE’S FAMILY “GIFTS OF HARVEST”. ONCE THE PARENTS APPROVE, THE GROOM WOULD WALK OFF WITH HIS NEW BRIDE, NOW HIS WIFE.

WITH THE MERGING OF THE TWO SOCIETIES (THE CHURCH AND THE BUGANDA TRADITION), TODAY THE KWANJULA IS THE FIRST CONDUCTED CEREMONY BEFORE THE ONE IN CHURCH.

THE GROOM IS INTRODUCED TO THE FAMILY OF THE BRIDE AT THE KWANJULA AND AT THE CHURCH CEREMONY THE COUPLE TAKE UP THEIR VOWS IN A MODERN RELIGIOUS MANNER.

ON THIS OCCASION, THE HEDIMASTA’S NIECE IS THE BRIDE, AND THERE IS A DOWRY TO THINK ABOUT.
